Any Opinions on Film Tourism ?

Has anyone else out there been to a destination because of a movie or something they saw in a movie ? eg. Scotland & Braveheart, New Zealand & Lord of the Rings, Ireland & The Quiet Man, The Bahamas & Casino Royale.

Well l have been to Kilmainhem Gaol in Dublin - where in the Name of the Father was filmed! Didnt go specifically because of the film though. I will be in New Zealand and looking forward to seeing the amazing scenery esp Milford Sound which looked so spectacular on the LOTR movies.

Hi Purdy
Great to hear from you. Were you aware the film had been shot in Kilmainhem Gaol in Dublin before you went there though? I agree with you about New Zealand - the movies definately showcased the country's scenery to great effect. I've just seen Casino Royale and that definately made me want to visit the Bahamas and Montenegro, which both looked amazing in the film.

Hi Peter

Yes l was aware the film had been shot there - but it was more because the historical element of the prision that drew me there! Havent been to see the bond film yet !

Hi Purdy,

Still not sure about Daniel Craig as Bond but the film was great. Do you think there's a element that we can be subconciously influenced by things we see in films? In other words maybe when the film isn't the main reason we go there its still a key reason how we become aware of the place or thought about it more? Anywhere else you'd like to visit that ties into films you've seen ?

Maybe your right maybe there was a subconcious element - l have never really thought about it before! I forgot - l have been to Phuket in Thailand out to one of the lagoons - Koh Hong aka James bond island - maybe Man with a Golden gun. Though l dont really remember it from the film - it was way too commericalised though beautiful. Also l was in Koh Phi Phi where the film The Beach was filmed.

Like the Thailand examples. Yes The Man with the Golden Gun was in the Phuket region and great to hear you have been to Koh Phi Phi too !

I've just set up a couple of dedicated blog sites to discuss this further Purdy with those who love travelling and have thoughts on movies being influences. Be great if you could post a few thoughts on them, help me get them going ? see if we can get some others interested in discussing and sharing in these ideas. Here are the links :

Just been to see the Bond Film - like you I was motivated to visit Montenegro - until I realised that we had actually been looking at the Czech Republic. This happens a lot in films and, depending on why you would be motivated to visit a location, can be confusing. For me, I would be inspired to visit the location I have been looking at, just as if I had seen it on a travel programme,, but I can appreciate that films like Braveheart, filmed mostly in Ireland, can inspire people to visit Scotland because of the historical aspect. I am definitely not into movie tours of cities eg New York 'Sex and the City Tours, although watching these programmes and films may motivate me to visit the location.
